Margie’s – Sweet in Chicago

With its classic neon signage, Margie’s provides a glimpse into real Chicagoland.

Set on a corner in the Bucktown neighbourhood, families and friends gather for sundaes and shakes at this long established ice cream parlour and candy maker.
Even at 11 pm on this hot, humid summer night, there’s a wait to get inside.
Whipped cream, multi scoops of ice cream, wafers, crushed nuts, cherries and hot fudge sauce served in ceramic shell bowls in a multitude of combinations with names like Atomic Sundae, Coco-Loco, and the Terrapin, a fancy name for the turtle chocolates that Margie’s makes.

The tiny place with cozy wrap around booths, is festooned with oddities: dolls, teddy bears, defunct jukeboxes, books on Greek history and fading photographs of customers, smiling and gathered around their sundaes, or snapshots of significant events in their lives.
